PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generation of negative energy in a cylinder at an explosion stroke. SOLUTION: A control device for an internal combustion engine comprises: an exhaust valve side variable valve system 2 changing a valve lift characteristic of an exhaust valve; and an ECU 1 for calculating cylinder pressure. The exhaust valve of the cylinder is opened at the timing where cylinder pressure at the explosion stroke is close to atmospheric pressure. Therefore, no negative energy is generated in the cylinder at the explosion stroke to prevent generation in pumping loss when the exhaust valve is operated. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
