PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high quality thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer in a high yield without generation of a low boiling point gas or discoloration by thermal deterioration. SOLUTION: The crystalline polymer having 50 mole% or over of a structural unit derived from 4-hydroxybenzoic acid is prepared by a reaction in the presence of an acylating agent and a catalytic amount of an aromatic sulfonic acid.
