PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder with high performance and low cost capable of realizing stable sheet feeding without being influenced by sheet material, etc. SOLUTION: The sheet feeder comprises feeding means 611, 612 for feeding a sheet on a loading tray 602 to a predetermined position, air discharge means 609, 610 for blowing air, position detecting means 607, 608 for detecting a position of the sheet levitated by air-blowing of the air discharge means, and tray raising/lowering means 603, 604 for raising/lowering the loading tray. The feeder determines whether the result of detecting the position of the levitated sheet by the position detecting means is within a predetermined range of a predetermined levitating position or not. If the result is out of the predetermined range, the tray raising/lowering means raise/lower the loading tray and the sheet levitating position is controlled to be within the predetermined range.
