<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the problem in which a user is not allowed to select either an image quality priority mode for giving priority to the image quality of an output image by image density adjustment or image gradation control or a speed priority mode for outputting an image in a short time by the partial or complete omission of the gradation control. <P>SOLUTION: A mode selection screen 60 for selecting an image formation mode is displayed onto the operation panel of the image forming apparatus. The mode selection screen 60 shows the image quality priority mode 61 for giving priority to image quality and the speed priority mode 62 for giving priority to speed so that either one of them can be selected. When a user selects the image quality priority mode, image control parameters are updated by image control immediately before image forming is effected, and the image forming is effected by using the updated image control parameters.
