PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method, a device and computer instructions for managing an operating system.

SOLUTION: A request from an operating system to seek registration about access to hardware in a logical partition data processing system is received by the logical partition data processing system (500). The request includes a key code to the operating system. In response to the reception of the request, a determination as to whether the operating system is an approved operating system is made by use of the key code (504). When the operating system is an approved operating system, the operating system is registered (508). Otherwise, the operating system is terminated (510).
