<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method for a new aromatic hydroxy compound excellent in selectivity and versatility. <P>SOLUTION: The production method comprises irradiating a metal-supporting photocatalyst with light in the presence of water to produce an aromatic hydroxy compound directly from an aromatic compound. Water hydroxylates the aromatic compound by the irradiation of the photocatalyst with light resulting in production of the aromatic hydroxy compound.
