PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup device capable of reading out an image signal at high speed without deteriorating image quality. SOLUTION: A plurality of capacitive elements (CS-N, CS-N+1, CR-N, and CR-N+1) are arranged corresponding to reading-out signal lines (9), respectively. Pixel signals read out from different lines are stored in the capacitive elements. Next, the capacitive elements are short-circuited by switching transistors (13, 18). The averaging of the pixel signals of the different lines are executed. Simultaneously, a sub-sampling operation for compressing maximum four pixels to one pixel is executed by electrically short-circuiting the capacitive elements, by switching transistors (12, 17) of the capacitive elements in adjacent rows.
