PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply stable spring force to a pawl in a hydraulic tensioner provided with a pawl ratchet mechanism having a backlash. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a piston 3 slidably inserted into a piston hole 2a in a housing 2, and having rack teeth 3b in the outer circumference, the pawl 5 having a tooth part 5a in a lower surface to be engaged with the rack teeth 3b in the piston 3 to allow protruding move of the piston 3, and regulate retracting move, a pawl hole 2b to store the pawl 5 having clearance to forward/back end surfaces of the pawl 5 to allow forward/backward move of the pawl 5, and a pawl spring 6 stored in a pawl spring storing part 20 above the pawl hole 2b to press the pawl 5 in such a direction that the tooth part 5b is engaged with the rack teeth 3b. The pawl spring 6 is an accordion type plate spring, and a flat surface 6a at the lowest end of it is in surface contact with an upper surface of the pawl 5. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
