PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a copolymer which can increase the content of a sulfonic acid group-containing vinyl monomer without causing the deposition, separation, or the like, in a copolymer solution when producing a copolymer of a sulfonic acid group-containing vinyl monomer and a vinyl monomer copolymerizable with it by a solution polymerization method, and to provide a fiber improved in dyeing properties, in particular during low temperature dyeing. SOLUTION: This method for producing the copolymer is the one that produces the copolymer of the sulfonic acid group-containing vinyl monomer and the vinyl monomer copolymerizable therewith by the solution polymerization method under a condition of the total concentration of monomers being 20 wt.% or higher, wherein the permeability of the obtained copolymer solution at 550 nm wavelength is 70% or higher of that of a polymerization solvent only, and the method is excellent in operability during production due to free from deposition, separation, or the like, of the copolymer.
