PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing a high-purity 2, 6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid. SOLUTION: The 2, 6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid is obtained by hydrolyzing a dilower alkyl ester of 2, 6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid in 3-50 times its weight of water in the presence of a basic compound, (A) 20-200 pts.wt. hydrophobic organic solvent chosen from the group consisting of aromatic compounds, ketones and ethers against 100 pts.wt. dilower alkyl ester of 2, 6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid and (B) 0.01-10 pts.wt. additive chosen from the group consisting of a polyalkylene glycol and a surfactant against 100 pts.wt. dilower alkyl ester of 2, 6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, separating an organic layer form an aqueous layer and subjecting the aqueous layer to acid precipitation and filtration.
