PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cleaning a foreign matter removing roll, by which hard-to-remove foreign matter such as small scale stuck to the roll can be efficiently wiped out. SOLUTION: In this method for cleaning the foreign matter removing roll for wiping out the foreign matter stuck to the surface of the foreign matter removing roll 1 by bringing a wiping material 2 into contact with the surface of the foreign matter removing roll 1 while making the wiping material 2 travel, the wiping material is made to travel while inclining the travelling direction (the inclined direction is shown by an arrow 4) at an angle of 5-85°with respect to the roll axis 1A of the foreign matter removing roll at the contact part 2C of the wiping material and/or reciprocating (oscillating) the travelling wiping material in the direction (shown by an arrow 9) perpendicular to the inclined travelling direction.
