PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a doped spherical carrying catalyst capable of increasing an initial activity and more suitably protecting a catalyst located downstream when being used in a fixed bed, and to provide a method for hydrotreating and hydrogenation converting a petroleum fraction containing a metal by using the above catalyst. SOLUTION: The carrying catalyst has a carrier mainly consisting of alumina and at least one kind of a catalyst metal in group VIB (the sixth row by a new notation of the periodical table) or a catalyst metal compound, wherein a pore structure consists of a plurality of juxtapositional aggregates, each of which is formed of a plurality of needlelike small plates and the small plates of each aggregate is, as a rule, radially arrayed to each other and also to a center of the aggregate. The carrier has a shape of bead and also the catalyst has at least one kind of doping element selected from the group consisting of P, B, Si and halogens. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
