Apparatus for transporting containers

A method for storing and transporting containers is provided. The method includes arranging containers in a container store ( 101 A, 101 B) in one or more rows of stacks or partial stacks. Stacks or partial stacks are transported by engaging with one or more containers using a movable engagement means ( 19 ) that engages with the containers from their side. The engagement means ( 19 ) moves the containers next to the rows before moving them along the row to a required location for placement on a partial stack or on a support surface. Also provided is apparatus for transporting containers and a method of container handling that involves only removing and storing excess containers from a flow of containers in order to fulfill an order.
