<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for grasping hierarchy of data to be transmitted. <P>SOLUTION: A UDP communication section 151 receives an RTP packet to be transmitted, and supplies the received RTP packet to an RTP packet processor 152. The processor 152 extracts hierarchy information from the RTP packet, and supplies the extracted hierarchy information to a hierarchy information holder 156. The holder 156 supplies the hierarchy information to a compositing section 154. The section 154 superimposes the hierarchy information over image data supplied from a decoder 153, and supplies the superimposed image data to an output section 87.
