PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a macromonomer composition with high productivity which shows little reduction in acid concentration caused by Michael addition reaction or decarboxylation reaction; shows low discoloration; and has high content of macromonomer composed of a vinyl polymer having a carboxy group, that is, high content of terminal ethylenic unsaturation. SOLUTION: The method for producing a polycarboxylic acid macromonomer composition comprises polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising 20-100 mass% of an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid monomer (a-1), 0-30 mass% of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monomer (a-2) and 0-80 mass% of another ethylenically unsaturated monomer (a-3) by adding 0-3 mol% of a radical polymerization initiator based on the total monomer in an aqueous medium at a pH in the range of 3.8-12 at a temperature in the range of 130-240°C.
