<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact nonlinear optical element (thin-wire optical waveguide, photonic crystal optical waveguide) capable of stably whitening optical pulses with high efficiency, a white pulse light source using the nonlinear optical element, and a variable wavelength pulse light source. <P>SOLUTION: A thin-wire optical waveguide or photonic crystal optical waveguide is so constituted that the cross section of a core is≤1μm<SP>2</SP>, the refractive index difference between the core and a clad is≥1, and an incidence pulse has peak power of hundreds of W and a≤10 ps pulse width, thereby increasing nonlinear optical effect for supercontinum light generation. As for element lengths, the thin-wire optical waveguide is sufficiently about 1 cm long and the photonic crystal waveguide is several mm long. Under said conditions, a mode synchronizing semiconductor laser is sufficiently used. Consequently, a compact white pulse light source and a variable wavelength pulse light source can be obtained by combining the mode synchronizing semiconductor laser 142 and a tunable optical fiber 145. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
