<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To output light beams within a waveguide surface, to reduce loss and the size, to realize high functionality for optically integrated circuits and to reduce cost in an optical multiplexer/demultiplexer, a wavelength variable filter and an optical switch in which photonic crystals are used. <P>SOLUTION: In a photonic crystal device that is provided with photonic crystals (1) in which a periodic structure having a two dimensional refractive index is provided in a wavelength order, a plurality of line defective type waveguides is provided in the photonic crystals (1). One (3) of the line defective type waveguides functions as an input waveguide having a light beam incident section on its end and another line defective type waveguide (4) functions as an output waveguide having a light beam emitting section on its end. A ring resonator (8) is provided between the input waveguide (3) and the output waveguide (4) by forming line defects into a ring shape or a polygonal shape. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
