<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a travel hindrance predicting system and an obstruction detecting method capable of surely detecting a person from an image picked up by a camera. <P>SOLUTION: An image of a front view of a vehicle is taken and the noise of the image is eliminated (100, 110). A background image is extracted from the image free from noise (120), and a relatively bright part is extracted from the image free from noise on the basis of the image free from noise and the background image (130). Then the data on an outline of the bright part is acquired (140). Then a plurality of parts composing the person are matched to the outline part of the bright part (150).
