PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize focus detection by a focus detection unit in an imaging apparatus whether the apparatus is set to a state in which a light flux is guided to a finder optical system or a state in which a light flux is guided to an image pickup element. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus has a first mirror 111 having a transmission area, a second mirror 122 comprising a reflection mirror, the finder optical system and the focus detection unit 121 performing the focus detection according to a phase difference detection system. The first and the second mirrors are switched to a first state in which a part of the light flux is reflected by the first mirror and guided to the finder optical system, and the light flux transmitted through the transmission area is reflected by the second mirror and guided to the focus detection unit, a second state in which the second mirror retracts from an optical axis, and a part of the light flux is reflected by the first mirror and guided to the focus detection unit and the light flux transmitted through the transmission area is guided to the image pickup element and a third state in which the light flux is made to reach the image pickup element without making the first and the second mirrors intervene.
