PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material realizing larger capacity than a conventional graphite negative electrode material and having cycle property superior to that of a conventional composite material of alloy and carbon containing silicon. SOLUTION: The negative electrode material is made to include composite particles consisting of a carbon material i and a composite material ii consisting of a silicon phase and a transition metal nitride phase. The composite material is provided by nitriding alloy consisting of transition metal and silicon. At the time of manufacturing, the composite material, the carbon material, the alloy consisting of the transition metal and silicon and carbon precursor are mixed and the obtained mixture is burnt in an atmosphere including nitrogen.
