PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a knife for medical use excellent in cutting properties, abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance and having long life. SOLUTION: The cutting edge portion 1 of a steel knife for medical use is coated with a hard carbon film 2 with a thickness above 0.02 mμand equal to 0.5μm or less. Alternatively, only one face 1b of the steel knife for medical use is coated with a hard carbon film 2b. It is preferable that the thickness of the hard carbon film 2b is above 0.02μm and equal to 0.5μm or less. Furthermore alternatively, one face 1a of the steel knife for medical use is coated with an ultrathin first hard carbon film 2c and the other face 1b of the cutting edge portion 1 is coated with a second hard carbon film 2d thicker than the first hard carbon film 2c. It is preferable that the thickness of the first hard carbon film 2c is above 0.02μm and equal to 0.1μm or less, and the thickness of the second hard carbon film 2d is above 0.1μm and equal to 0.5μm or less.
