PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface structure which is good in wear resistance by integration with a base metal being an austenitic stainless steel and is improved in both of corrosion resistance and wear resistance as a thickest possible hardened layer or a method capable of forming such surface structure. SOLUTION: The surface structure of the austenitic stainless steel is composed of the stainless steel of an austenitic phase as the base metal and is provided with the surface hardened layer, wherein the surface hardened layer is composed of a two-layer structure having a carbohardened layer consisting of a carburized layer or carbonitrided layer as an inner layer and a nitrided layer as an outer layer. The surface structure is formed by applying a cathodic voltage in a discharge state to a work composed of the stainless steel of the austenitic phase as the base metal and forming the carbohardened layer composed of the plasma carburized layer or the plasma carbonitrided layer at 400 to 500°C within an atmosphere of a carburizing gas containing gaseous hydrocarbon or a carbonitriding gas containing gaseous nitrogen together with the gaseous hydrocarbon, then forming the plasma nitrided layer at≤450°C on the work surface containing the gaseous nitrogen.
