A method of scanning biological specimens, the method comprising processing an input image (U) to produce an output image (N(U)), the image comprising regions that represent biological structures. The method comprises segmentation of the image to identify such regions therein. The input image comprises at least one first pixel (a), neighbouring pixels (a'), and distant pixels (a''), the neighbouring pixels surrounding the first pixel, and each pixel having an intensity characteristic. The processing comprises categorizing the first pixel according to the intensity characteristic, wherein the first pixel is identified to be within one of the regions if the first pixel has a first intensity characteristic, and the neighbouring pixels also have the first intensity characteristic, and the distant pixels have a second intensity characteristic, which is different to said first intensity characteristic. The predetermined characteristic of the regions may be the size of the region, and the processing of the image may be performed on an area-by-area basis, by applying a morphological transform to each area. |
