The method involves directly conveying tobacco stream into the detection area of a foreign material detection laser (20) via compressed air (11). Foreign materials (17) in the tobacco stream are identified by the foreign material detection laser based on at least one characteristic. The detected foreign materials are removed from the tobacco stream.
