An encoded carrier for detecting target molecules comprising a code region having a code and a reaction region separate from said code region wherein the carrier is arranged to flex. Preferably the carrier flexes when a reaction takes place on the reaction region. The reaction region may comprise probe molecules that interact with target molecules. These are exemplified as nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), proteins, peptides, antibodies or antigens and ligands. The carrier may have a diffraction grating, a dielectric or metal layer and be less than 400 um by 400um. Methods of detect binding of a target molecule to such carriers by measuring a caustic or catacaustic optical effect as a result of binding of the target molecule to the reaction region and flexing of the carrier are claimed. The coded region of the carrier can contain information about the carrier and its probes, for example in alphanumeric or binary code. |
