The apparatus includes a shaft (1) with an external cooling system comprising a supply pipe (14) and a discharge pipe (15) for a heat transfer medium which are connected to the shaft via passages (13) in the shaft walls (2, 3) and to the case via passages in the latter. The cooling circuit (18) can be an open one with the ends of the pipes (29, 30) in communication with the surrounding atmosphere, or it can be a closed one. The equipment (12) is mounted inside a watertight case (9) inside the shaft.
