Described is a composition containing a bioerodible gel and compressed particulates of an active agent, the particulates being dispersed within the bioerodible gel, wherein the bioerodible gel contains a polymer selected from the group consisting of polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid and poly(lactide-co-glycolic) acid and a solvent comprising an alkyl or aralkyl ester of benzoic acid; with the provisio that the compressed particulates do not include a hydrophobic agent. Also described is a process for the preparation of an implantable composition previously disclosed and preferably the active agent can be selected from the group consisting of human growth hormone, alpha-, beta-, or gamma-interferon, erythropoiten, glucagons, calcitonin, heparin, interleukin-1, interleukin-2, Factor VII, Factor IX, lutenizing hormone, relaxin, follicle-stimulating hormone, atrial natriuretic factor and filgrastim.
