The invention refers to medicine, in particular to hepatology and may be used for treatment of patients with decompensated hepatic cirrhosis, complicated with portal encephalopathy. Summary of the invention consists in the use of mesalasine for treatment of portal encephalopathy in the decompensated hepatic cirrhosis. The result of the invention consist in diminishing the intestinal mucosa chronic inflammatory process, modifying the acid-alkali balance of the intestinal content, suppressing the putrefactive processes in the intestines and decreasing the intestinal wall permeability for intestinal endotoxins, which prevents the endogenic intoxication and the portal encephalopathy.
