PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chemically stable pyridinium compound having liquid crystallinity over a wide temperature range from about room temperature and further having excellent ion conductivity and to provide a ligand thereof. SOLUTION: The pyridinium compound is represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>denotes a 1-25C straight-chain or branched hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent, a 3-30C cyclic hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent or a 2-30C heterocyclic group which may have a substituent; R<SP>2</SP>denotes a hydrogen atom, a 1-25C straight-chain or branched hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent, a 3-30C cyclic hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent or a 2-30C heterocyclic group which may have a substituent; Z denotes a single bond, an oxygen atom, a nitrogen atom or a sulfur atom; Y<SP>1</SP>and Y<SP>2</SP>denote each independently a hydrogen atom, a cyano group, a nitro group, a halogen atom, a trifluoromethyl group, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group; and X<SP>-</SP>denotes an anion).
