PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zirconia photocatalyst by creating a new level of an impurity in the forbidden band of zirconia to make the light absorption edge shift to longer wavelengths. SOLUTION: A precursor produced by polymerization of a chemically modified zirconium alkoxide by partial hydrolysis is formed into a powder, fiber, thin film or nano-sheet and sintered in the atmosphere or an atmosphere comprising one or more selected from air, oxygen, ammonia and hydrogen to produce a zirconia photocatalyst having a light absorption edge 400 nm or more. Formation of a new level of an impurity in the valence band of zirconia permits shifting of the absorption edge to longer wavelengths. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
