PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an azo compound excellent in heat-resistance and lightfastness, and excellent in solubility in water and organic solvents. SOLUTION: The azo compound is represented by general formula (I), wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>denote each hydrogen, a 1-21C alkyl group, a 2-21C alkenyl group, a 6-21 aryl group or a 7-21C aralkyl group (R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>may form a heterocyclic ring together with a nitrogen atom which is coupled to them); R<SP>3</SP>denotes a halogen, a trihalomethyl group, a 1-21C alkoxy group, a nitro group or an amino group; R<SP>4</SP>denotes a halogen or -SO<SB>3</SB>M group (M: cation of a metal atom or a nitrogen-containing compound); and m=0-5 and n=0-4.
