PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve opening/closing characteristic controller of an internal combustion engine capable of changing the opening/closing characteristics of an engine valve by stably controlling a variable mechanism even in a transient time in which the detection signals of a sensor detecting the operating state of the variable mechanism vary largely. SOLUTION: This valve opening/closing characteristic controller of the internal combustion engine comprises the variable mechanism capable of changing the opening/closing characteristics of the engine valve and a detection means detecting the rotating phase R of the variable mechanism in the operating state. The variable mechanism is drivingly controlled to match the actual opening/closing characteristics of the engine valve obtained based on the detected values of a detection means with the target opening/closing characteristics of the engine valve set based on the operating state of the internal combustion engine. In this case, the variable wave of the rotating phase R periodically produced by the driving of the engine valve is generated based on the operating state of the internal combustion engine.
