摘要 <p>[PROBLEMS] To provide a method for producing a glass base material in a stabilized state where a starting glass material does not swing during deposition by preventing the starting glass material from being scratched or shaken at a grasping part when the starting glass material is grasped by a metallic chuck and fine glass particles are deposited on the outer circumference thereof. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] The method for producing a glass base material is characterized in that when fine glass particles are deposited on the outer circumference of the starting glass material by rotating the starting glass material while being grasped by a grasping device, a buffer material having protrusions and recesses on the surface is interposed between the starting glass material and the grasping part of the grasping device wherein an elastic material having a thickness at least two times the depth of protrusions and recesses existing on the surface of the starting glass material is preferably employed as the buffer material being interposed between the starting glass material and the grasping part of the grasping device.</p>
