The garden pond system has a primary pond (1), secondary pond (3) with an overflow (2) inbetween. A cistern (20) with level sensor (24,25) and pump (27) is fitted with a return pipe (28) leading back to one of the ponds whilst a pipe (22) mounted in the cistern is in flow connection with one of the ponds and has an outlet opening (23) which is higher than a predetermined level (24) of the regeneration pond (3), A rainwater supply device (10,15) feeds rainwater to one of the ponds. The level sensor is preferably mounted in the pipe in the cistern below the outlet opening.
