<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a highly precise vector detection while suppressing the amount of operations and a circuit scale by determining appropriately the search range of the motion vector based on the analysis of the statistic amount of the motion vector which is already found. <P>SOLUTION: In a motion vector detecting apparatus, this method determines a search unit having a size and an aspect ratio which can be constituted as the assembly of the search unit suitable for constituting the region as the search region; and calculates the amount of statistic of motion vector which is already found in a vector information read-out region in an origin image set to a center, in the position of an MB under processing or a vector information read-out region in a reference image set to a center in the position corresponding to the MB under processing. The appearance tendency of the motion vector is predicted by analyzing the amount of statistic, and a hybrid of the search unit is determined so that an extended search region is formed in the direction in which the occurrence probability of the motion vector to the MB under processing becomes large based on this analysis. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
