PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which can appropriately adjust the amount of oxygen required for burning the by-product of dry distillation (the formed gas) to be dissipated from the upper part of the riser of an coke oven into the atmosphere to efficiently perform combustion treatment. SOLUTION: The method of treating a coke oven discharge by-product comprises blowing an oxygen-containing gas into the by-product of dry distillation (the formed gas) inside a riser and/or in the upper part of the outlet of the riser to burn the by-product, and with the use of a coking decision index measured in the riser section (the temperature of the gas formed), the amount of the discharge by-product formed on and after coking is estimated, and based on this estimation, the amount of the oxygen-containing gas blown is adjusted. Adjustment of the amount of the oxygen gas-containing gas blown while observing the index for coking from coking to soaking can quickly and surely cope with the variation in the amount of the gas formed unexpectedly on dry distillation.
