PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can print by a high quality by making a gap between a printing head and a platen proper corresponding to a thickness and a paper quality of a recording paper. SOLUTION: After a home position is recorded by turning off an initial switch 58 by a motor 50, the motor 50 is reversed and the printing head 31 is pressed by a gap adjustment device 6 to the recording paper located on the platen 35. Pulse inputting to the motor is further continued even after the pressing. A difference of periods between an input pulse of the motor 50 and an output pulse detected by an encoder 54 is operated, and a pulse number is recorded when the difference amount exceeds preliminarily stored two setting values. A starting position of the difference is calculated from the pulse numbers of two points, whereby the gap between the printing head 31 and the platen 35 is adjusted. Since the operation is carried out from data of two points, it is highly precise, and can make judgment of the paper quality.
