PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To yield a glass composition for a substrate which is lightweight and difficult to be damaged. SOLUTION: The glass composition for a substrate consists of SiO<SB>2</SB>of 59-72 wt.%, Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>of 1-15 wt.%, MgO of 0.5-9 wt.%, CaO of 0.5-11 wt.%, SrO of 0-6 wt.%, BaO of 0-5 wt.%, MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO of 4-19 wt.%, Na<SB>2</SB>O of 0-9 wt.%, K<SB>2</SB>O of 4-21 wt.%, Na<SB>2</SB>O+K<SB>2</SB>O of 10-22 wt.%, and ZrO<SB>2</SB>of 0.5-10.5 wt.%, wherein the difference between the SiO<SB>2</SB>content and the Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>content is 50-71%, and the specific gravity of the composition is less than 2.6.
