PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the presence/absence of sheets of a special size smaller than a fixed size stored in a paper feed cassette without any alternation in configuration of the body part in a feeder. SOLUTION: In this paper feeding mechanism, when a sheaf of paper sheets is placed on a bottom plate 84, a first constraining member 132 abuts on the lower surface part of the sheaf B of paper sheets, and when all recording paper sheets P are carried out from the bottom plate 84, the constraining member allows a detecting lever 118 from a non-detecting position to a detecting position. Thus, when the sheaf B of paper sheets is placed on the bottom plate 84, the detecting lever 118 is rocked from the non-detecting position to the detecting position by its dead load and an empty sensor 128 detects that all recording paper sheets P are carried out from the paper feed cassette 82 in the case where the empty sensor 128 does not detect that all recording paper sheets P are carried out from the paper feed cassette 82 and a sheaf of paper sheets B is not placed on the bottom plate 84.
