PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide metal oxide particles which are excellent in absorption efficiency of ultraviolet rays in a long-wavelength region and have such a characteristic that the ultraviolet absorption edge is shifted toward the longer wavelength side. SOLUTION: In each metal oxide particle, a component originating in metal elements (M') except a metal element (M) is contained in the particle of the oxide of the metal element (M). The metal element (M) is at least one kind selected from the group comprising Zn, Ti, Ce, In, Sn, Al and Si, and the metal elements (M') are different from the metal element (M) and at least two kinds selected from the group comprising Co, Cu, Fe, Bi, In, Al, Ga, Ti, Sn, Ag, Mn, Ni and Ce.
