PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous material of an intermetallic compound, and to provide a method for efficiently manufacturing it. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the porous material comprises compacting a mixed powder comprising two or more inorganic powders, and making the obtained compact cause a combustion synthesis reaction therein. Thus obtained porous material has such features that (1) it contains the intermetallic compound, (2) the intermetallic compound has a three-dimensional mesh skeletal structure, and (3) it has a relative density of about 80% or less.
