PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, since the conventional diamond-carrying metal base material in which electrically conductive diamond is carried on a base material is produced by a CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) process, the defect that the carried electrically conductive diamond is peeled by use over a long period, or a carrying metal base material with a size usable as a large-sized electrode can not be obtained. SOLUTION: The diamond-carrying metal base material comprises: a metal base material containing one or more kinds of metals; and a binder including diamond and at least one kind of the above metals, and includes a coating layer formed on the surface of the metal base material. Since the metal base material and the binder comprise the common metal, affinity therebetween is high, and the diamond-containing coating layer is firmly bonded to the metal base material. Further, when the diamond-carrying metal base material is produced by a thermal decomposition method, a large quantity of binder including diamond can be formed on a large-sized base material by coating, thus the metal base material large-sized to a practical level can be obtained.
