Apparatus for slabbing a roll of material

An apparatus removes wound material from a roll in bulk. The apparatus comprises a transport element capable of engaging a roll of material and of transporting the roll to a slabbing position. The apparatus further comprises a cutter capable of separating the material of the roll in the slabbing position, an axial-traversing element capable of transporting the cutter along a line substantially parallel to the axis of the roll in the slabbing position, a radial-traversing element capable of transporting the cutter along a line substantially parallel to the radius of a roll in the slabbing position, and a controller capable of determining a maximum depth of cut for the cutter. The motion of the radial-traversing element is limited by the maximum depth of cut.
