PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set the appropriate quantity of fuel injection (supply quantity) and ignition timing according to actual valve timing. SOLUTION: This control device for an internal combustion engine provided with a variable valve timing mechanism for changing the opening/closing timing of an intake valve or an exhaust valve of the engine, is provided with an opening/closing timing detecting means capable of detecting the opening/closing timing at optional timing. Actual valve timing (actual rotation phaseθdet) is detected by the opening/closing timing detecting means (S14), and when starting the engine, starting fuel injection control and starting ignition timing control for correcting the fuel injection quantity (supply quantity) and ignition timing according to the detected valve timing are carried out (S15-17).
