PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wireless communication system capable of efficiently suppressing increase in the power consumption of a mobile wireless communication apparatus. SOLUTION: The wireless communication system is configured such that an on-vehicle wireless communication apparatus 10 installed on a vehicle 1 and a mobile phone 20 possessed by a driver of the vehicle 1 can make near distance wireless communication. When an engine key switch is closed, the on-vehicle wireless communication apparatus 10 transmits information denoting the driver riding on the vehicle to the mobile phone 10 via a mobile telephone network. When the engine key switch is turned off, the on-vehicle wireless communication apparatus 10 transmits information denoting the driver riding-off the vehicle to the mobile phone 10 via the mobile telephone network. On the other hand, upon the receipt of the information denoting the driver riding on the vehicle, the mobile phone 20 turns on the power of a near distance communication section 21 for making near distance wireless communication, and upon the receipt of the information denoting the driver riding off the vehicle, the mobile phone 20 turns off the power of the near distance communication section 21.
