PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical encoder equipped with a discontinuous part in a scale or its incidental member, and capable of detecting an absolute position. SOLUTION: The optical encoder comprises a scale 11, an illumination part 12 composed of two light emission elements 12a, 12b, and a light receiving part 13 in parallel with a plurality of photodiodes S. Where, the light emitted from the illumination part 12 is reflected by the scale 11 having reflection parts and non-reflection parts with small intervals, while imparting light and dark distribution on the light receiving part 13. On the reflection part of the scale 11 moving linearly toward X direction, the discontinuous parts 11a being non-reflection parts are partially provided in the moving direction of the scale 11. The light receiving signal obtained by the light receiving part 13 detects the discontinuous part 11a and also detects the absolute signal by the process circuit. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
