PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pulse tester capable of measuring such an optical fiber communication system that excessive background light except return light is made incident from an optical fiber to be measured. SOLUTION: As means for amplifying electric signals from a light receiver 5, the optical pulse tester is provided with both a first amplifying means 6 at which a first offset voltage a1 changeable in a step of a first prescribed voltage value can be set and a second amplifying means 7 at which a second offset voltage a2 changeable in a step of a second prescribed voltage value smaller than the first prescribed voltage value can be set. With return light of optical pulses from the optical fiber 12 to be measured not incident onto the light receiver 5, an offset voltage of an A/D converter 10 is first made to lie within a first prescribed voltage range at the first offset voltage a1 of the first amplifying means 6 and then made to lie within a second prescribed voltage range narrower than the first prescribed voltage range at the second offset voltage a2 of the second amplifying means 7, and then optical pulses are made emergent to the optical fiber 12 to be measured.
