PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder, in which a large amount of documents can be set, and in which operability is improved. SOLUTION: In prescribed time after a lift plate is set in a feed start state (step 6: YES), a lift motor is reversed to lower the lift plate for prescribed amount (5mm, for example) (step S7). As the lift plate is lowered for the prescribed amount, reverse rotation of the lift motor is stopped (step S8), and the lift plate is set in a stand-by state. Since the document is separated from a feed roller, and a contact state between the document and the feed roller is released, truing-up of the document or addition of new documents become possible, and operability is thus improved.
