PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a band saw blade exchange assisting device which allows a single operator to easily and safely exchange a band saw blade without requiring special equipment, and to provide a band saw blade exchanging method using the device. SOLUTION: The horizontal band sawing machine includes a vertically movable saw blade housing, a driving wheel 17 and a driven wheel 21 rotatably supported in the housing, the band saw blade 23 wrap-connected to the driving and the driven wheels to carry out rotative traveling, and a pair of saw blade guides for vertically twisting and erecting a horizontally traveling section of an upper traveling section 23U of the band saw blade traveling between the driving and the driven wheels. The band saw blade exchange assisting device is provided for the horizontal band sawing machine, and formed of a saw blade support body 33 and a plurality of support arms 31 which are arranged at an upper location of a vertical moving area of the saw blade housing of the horizontal band sawing machine. The saw blade support body 33 has an opening 35 which temporarily holds therein an almost intermediate area of the upper traveling section of the band saw blade, and the support arms 31 temporarily hold a lower traveling portion 23L of the band saw blade.
