PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing trans-1,4-polybutadiene with high activity by a simple process. SOLUTION: The method for producing trans-1,4-polybutadiene comprises polymerizing 1,3-butadiene by using a catalyst comprising (A) a halogen-containing vanadium compound, (B) a halogen-containing aluminum compound represented by R<SB>2</SB>AlX<SB>1</SB>, and (C) water, wherein the ratio of the number of the aluminum (Al) atoms in the component (B) to the number of the vanadium (V) atoms in the component (A) is 50 to 2, and the ratio R/H of the number of the alkyl groups (R) in the component (B) to the number of the hydrogen atoms (H) in the water (C) is 2 to 6.
